Christianity and Islam in Nigeria

In Nigeria, Christianity is more prevalent in the south and Islam is more prevalent in the north. For example, in Lagos state in the south, home to approximately 13.4 million people, 83% are Christian, according to the World Christian Database. In Kano state in the north, 91% of the population of 14 million is Muslim.

Christians face persecution in the north and middle belt of the country, according to this country profile of Nigeria from Open Doors. In 2021, the country ranked #9 out of the top 50 countries where Christians face the most persecution.

Pray for the Lord’s grace and comfort for believers as many are displaced, have lost loved ones and their homes, and many have also experienced trauma. Ask the Lord to be near those who have been kidnapped and pray that they will be released or rescued.
